Red Barron Mustard Seeds
Red Barron is a vivid red-purple Asian mustard green with frilled, tender leaves, quick growth, and a refined peppery-sweet bite. It is selected for reliable colour and resilience in cool spring and fall weather, with enough strength for productive baby-leaf harvests and full-size bunches.
Flavor Profile
- Bright mustard edge without an overwhelming bite.
- Tender texture that stays enjoyable from baby leaf through bunching size.
- Deep colour adds instant contrast to salads, bowls, and market bunches.
In The Kitchen
Use young leaves raw with citrus, sesame, radish, apples, or soft cheese. Mature leaves hold their structure in noodles, rice bowls, stir-fries, broths, beans, and warm grain salads. Grow it as a microgreen or harvest repeatedly as a cut-and-come-again salad mustard.
Growing Notes
- Sow densely in fertile, evenly moist soil during the cool shoulders of the season.
- Succession sow every few weeks for a continuous supply of baby leaves.
- Harvest outer leaves repeatedly or cut whole clumps before hot weather encourages bolting.
- Provide afternoon shade as temperatures rise for the best colour and texture.
Packet: 10+ seeds. Leaf colour, texture, and heat are strongest in cool growing conditions.
Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Germinate at 26–30 °C on a heat mat; peppers stall below 22 °C. Pot up to 10–15 cm before hardening off outside after nights stay above 12 °C.
Feed balanced through bloom, then bump potassium for fruiting. Stake taller varieties. More detail in our full Canadian growing guide.
Match the pepper to the technique: thin-walled varieties blister fast in a hot pan; thick-walled ones roast or stuff beautifully; fruit-forward ones make balanced sauces and pickles. The variety's flavour profile is your shortcut — see Choosing the right pepper for a use-case guide.
